First Khutbah
Dear Friday Jamaah,
If the light of the faith (eiman) that shines in a Muslim’s heart is not reinforced with deeds (‘amal), it may lead to a fading out of that light. Additionally, it may not suffice to take that person, after death, to infinite boons in paradise. There are many ayats and hadiths that warn us about this matter. Our Lord (s.w.t.) has ordained in the Qur’ân as follows:
And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death). [Al-Hijr 15:99]
And it is not your wealth or your children that bring you nearer to Us in position, but it is [by being] one who has believed and done righteousness. For them there will be the double reward for what they did, and they will be in the upper chambers [of Paradise], safe [and secure]. [Saba’ 34:37]
And in another verse it has been decreed:
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, “This is what we were provided with before.” And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. [Al Baqoroh 2:25]
My Dear Brothers,
When the life of Rasûlullah is studied, it will be recognized that He lived a harmonious life with His sayings and beliefs. His teachings were not composed of only a faith system and mere theoretical remarks, but they showed the best example of a lifestyle. That’s why He was described as the “best example” by Allah (s.w.t.).
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. [Al-Ahzab 33:21]
Similarly, His companions (ashâb kirâm) were devoted to the values that they believed, but, beyond that, they behaved very carefully about performing what they believed or said. In the event of inobservance of what they knew, those distinguished predecessors feared of not satisfying their responsibilities, regarding the Hereafter.
My Dear Brothers
The harmony of a Muslim’s deeds with his/her faith is an indication of that s/he has a strong eiman. While the fundamentals of
eiman constitute the root and the body of a tree, deeds (amal) form the leaves and the fruit of that tree. The trunk has vital importance for the tree in order to produce leaves and fruit, but the benefit of a tree without fruit is limited. Additionally, the first sign of a tree that has started to dry is that its leaves turn yellow and begin to shed. Eiman without worship resembles the same.
A Muslim, who has a perfect (kâmil) eiman, should endeavor to perform the worship of his/her faith and to win the otherworldly happiness with both the eiman and the deeds. In finishing this khutba with a hadith of our beloved Prophet (s.a.w.), it should be noted that, “The most beloved of deeds to Allah is the one that is continuous, even if it is little.” [Bukhârî, Eiman, 32; Muslim, Musâfirîn, 221]
